The life and legacy of Technoblade, the beloved and influential Minecraft creator who died in 2022, will be chronicled in a feature-length documentary film.

Titled “Technoblade Never Dies” — a catchphrase of the late California-based creator — the project is being made with the full support and cooperation of Technoblade’s family. The film is being produced by Candle Media’s Candle True Stories with financing from Riot Games and Hypixel Studios, both of which will donate their profits from the film to charity. Hypixel Studios is an independent game studio founded by the team behind Hypixel, the world’s biggest Minecraft server.

The film is intended to be “an independent feature documentary to bring Technoblade’s story and community to audiences around the world,” according to Candle True Stories.

“Technoblade Never Dies” is just entering production and there is no release date yet. The film’s producers say the plan is to premiere it at a major festival, followed by a theatrical release and then broader distribution (with a distribution deal yet to be secured).

Directed by documentary maker Steven Lake, “Technoblade Never Dies” promises to tell for the first time the story of the young man behind the legendary online alter ego. Per Candle True Stories’ description: “Through intimate access to his family and friends, hundreds of hours of Technoblade’s own content, and stories from the massive global community he inspired, the film will explore how a shy and anonymous California teenager transformed himself into a Minecraft warrior whose humor, skill and singular personality captured the hearts of millions.”

Technoblade’s community remains active today: His YouTube channel currently has nearly 23 million subscribers, and his influence persists across gaming culture — including a tribute to his iconic crowned-pig avatar in 2025’s “A Minecraft Movie.”

Technoblade began creating Minecraft videos as a teenager with the dream of reaching 10 million subscribers to his YouTube channel, a goal he achieved in late 2021, just months before his death.

In 2021, Technoblade revealed his cancer diagnosis and continued communicating with fans throughout treatment with the humor and resilience that defined him. Following his death in June 2022 at the age of 23, his father shared his final message, “so long nerds,” revealing his son’s name for the first time: Alex. (The family has kept their identity private.)

In addition to Technoblade’s own life and experiences, the film will also explore the community he left behind and the bond it has formed with his family, particularly his father, Marshall, who became known to fans as “Mr. Technodad.”

Following Technoblade’s death, more than 400,000 messages from fans were collected in a virtual Minecraft memorial and transformed into 22 books of condolences for his family. The film will explore the “extraordinary relationship between creator and community, weaving together stories from fans around the world whose lives were shaped by Technoblade and showing how an online fandom became a real-world source of friendship, connection and collective grief,” per Candle True Stories.

“’Technoblade Never Dies’ is an endearing and authentic exploration of the positive power of the internet and video games,” Lake said in a statement. “The Technoblade story is a triumphant exploration of the echo that the ones we love leave behind.”

“Technoblade Never Dies” is produced by Max Heckman for Candle True Stories, Robert Ford and Steven Lake. James Goldston serves as executive producer for Candle True Stories.

Candle True Stories is part of Candle Media, the media holding company co-founded by former Disney execs Kevin Mayer and Tom Staggs. Candle True Stories produces premium, scripted and nonscripted content for a variety of formats and platforms, including 2026 titles for Netflix, “Should I Marry a Murderer?” and “Michael Jackson: The Verdict.” Prior projects include two series for Paramount+, “Wild Boys: Strangers In Town” and “The Carters,” as well as a U.K. version of ABC News’ “20/20” and Netflix’s “Untold: The Liver King.”

Honestly heartbreaking. When I first heard that he had died, I couldn’t believe it. My heart fell into a deep, dark pit. He made my life better. Any day that was bad, he turned upside down. Thank you, Technoblade. As he once said, “Technoblade Never Dies”, and he was right. His legacy will live on. Rest in peace.
