The most notable thing about the new Erewhon market that recently opened in Thousand Oaks isn’t that it finally lets Ventura residents buy a $21 smoothie without crossing county lines. It’s that it’s the 16th Erewhon. Add two more stores planned for 2027 — in downtown L.A. and Costa Mesa — plus another reportedly in the works at a still-undisclosed location, and you’re at 19.

That’s perilously close to 20, a number that could put a chill in Los Angeles’ long, steamy love affair with the uber-bougie grocery store chain. Indeed, it could send its hipster clientele stampeding back to the valet parking lot. Because federal statute requires that any food-service establishment with 20 or more locations must display the calorie counts for the prepared “restaurant-type” food on their menus.

That most definitely includes Erewhon’s luxe steak-and-eggs breakfast burrito with chipotle mayo, which the nutritionists in Rambling’s test kitchens calculate is in the 800- to 900-calorie range. The organic coconut turmeric chicken tenders — made with coconut cream, brown rice flour and non-GMO avocado oil — clock in at upward of 700 calories for a decent portion. The numbers are only slightly less horrific at the beverage bar — calorically, if not financially. The $21 Hailey Bieber Strawberry Glaze Skin Smoothie, with maple syrup, avocado and collagen among its listed ingredients, is about 600 calories.

Of course, if you’ve got the willpower, you could always limit yourself to a 400-calorie bag of kale chips — but those’ll cost you $16.

Erewhon, for some reason, did not respond to Rambling’s inquiries.
